One lady has one earring and one crystal missing from dress, the other lady has all accessories intact. This gorgeous Barsony head lamp the couple is in good condition. The woman has a tiny hairline mark halfway around her neck which possibly has been repaired and painted over as some time. The company Barsony Ceramics was in full operation in during 1950’s to the 1970’s in Guildford western Sydney, New South Wales. George Barsony was a sculptor who moved to Australia from his home country of Hungary in 1949, and built his business with his wife Jean. Not a lot is known of the history of the company, which found a niche in the ornamental market and, seemingly, made a killing in the 1950s and 1960s. Judging by the quanity still around today, the firm was churning them out in the thousands.

Barsony Ceramics also made items under the Venice and Silver Cloud, sometimes you may find a Black Lady stamped Silver Cloud. Barsony manufactured many forms of day to day decor items, which included lamps and lamp bases, candlesticks, figurines, ashtrays, wall hangings, bookends, figure vases, bowls etc. The occasional item from this genre have been found with "Made in England" stickers, though it appears this was pretty much an Australian product. Certainly, anything with an undamaged Barsony label is given a premium price in here.

Barsony used prefix stampings on their items, for example, F, FL, GL, H, HL, L, U, T, V, followed by a number. The letter stamping identified the type of item e.g. H stood for head , HL stood for head lamp, V meant vase, F for figurine, FL meant figurine lamp etc. Usually the pieces are stamped on the base and intermittently are companied with a Barsony Ceramics sticker.

Barsony Black Lady figures have a soft, gentle roundness on all features. Facial features are never prominent, with lips glowing in red and sometimes subtle colour painted to the eyes. Breasts are always quite round, not pointed, and the same with heads. The distinctive feature of Barsony Black Ladies is the beautiful lively coloured paint to imply garments and other floral designs.

In the present boom, some of these lamps have sold for as much as $1000. Even dealers think this is over the top and suggest $500 to $600 is about the maxium for even the finest pieces.

It appears the name of these Australia icons has spread around the world. So if you find one of these beautiful pieces in a your parents or grandparents home, and it comes your way, it maybe worth its weight in gold someday.

This Australia Retro Barsony Black Banjo Player lamp and shade, it has all the original fittings, plug & is in working order. There are some small chips around his foot, Trouser leg & a tiny one on his chest, A couple of unnoticeable on the face, The horrible repair can be smoothed out some & painted black & it is very firm. The lovely old ribbon shade is made of satin & not plastic & I would describe it as in reasonable / good condition for its age. It does have some fading. When turned on at night the ruby coloured glow it gives off is very beautiful & all its faults are forgotten. It measures 46 cm to the top of the shade & 21 m to the top of the ceramic lamp. Barsony Ceramics was a ceramics manufacturing company, operated by George and Jean Barsony, from early '50s to early '70s. It was located in Guildford, near Sydney. During peak production the company employed quite a few people in their workshop and often ran shifts to meet the demand.

Barsony Ceramics also produced items under the Silver Cloud and Venice label. Apparently, Silver Cloud, was the name of a horse that belonged to Jean Barsony's sister.

Barsony produced many forms of slip mould products, which included candlesticks, figurines, lamp bases, ashtrays, wall hangings, bookends, figures vases, bowls etc. Ashtrays were attached to ornamental figurines to avoid a huge sales tax placed on ornamental items as utility items attracted much less tax.

Barsony used prefix markings on their products, for example, F, FL, GL, H, HL, L, U, T, V, followed by a number. The letter marking identified the type of product e.g. H meant head, V means vase, L means lamp, FL stands for figure lamp and HL stands for head lamp, and so on, while the number that followed was the mould number.

Most Barsony products were marked, but an absence of a mark does not mean they were not made by Barsony, as occcasionally the impression of the mark was lost during firing. Some products were also mounted on a wooden base, which was fixed to the figure by screwing the base into corks inserted in the base of the figure, thus concealing the maker's mark.

Although better known for their matt black finish, Barsony also created in lustre and brown and white finishes.

The plastic ribbon shade was definitely the most popular shade that he used but there were also an assortment of shades wrapped with raffia and trimmed with thin, velvet ribbon. white ribbon with gold fleck etc etc. The original ribbon shades are from light plastic strips, similar to shower curtain plastic, often with panels of printed plastic between solid colour.

Many of these shades have failed to stand the test of time, mainly due to the use of higher powered globes that weakened and burnt the strips. The recommended wattage should not exceed 40 watts.

These days Barsony products are highly collectable and fetch high prices at traditional and online auctions sites, which unfortunately has led to almost any black ceramic being named as Barsony.

· Barsony figures have a smooth, gentle roundness on all features. Facial features are never prominent, with lips highlighted in red and occasionally subtle colour applied to the eyes. Breasts are always rounded, never pointed, and the same with head shape.

· Barsony used only single strand brass earrings (apart from pearl drops) - not the twisted style seen on some black ladies.

· The unique feature of Barsony is the clever use of brightly coloured paint to imply clothing and other floral decorations.
